Argentina Freezes Crypto Linked to Syrian Militant Group
Argentina's Financial Information Unit (UIF) has frozen cryptocurrencies tied to individuals associated with Syria's Hay’et Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), marking the first public action against assets linked to the group. The freeze targets a Russian national residing in Argentina and a foreign individual sanctioned by the U.S. and Israel.
Authorities acted under anti-terrorism laws after flagging suspicious transactions on local exchanges. While the amounts were small, the funds flowed through accounts with known red flags. HTS, formed from factions including al-Qaeda affiliates, recently had its U.S. terrorist designation revoked following Syrian regime changes.
